Non-Conventional Oil & Gas Research

Non-conventional oil and gas companies rely on techniques other than the traditional oil well production methods. Although non-conventional types of production may include a variety of methods, including biofuel production, conversion of coal or natural gas to liquid hydrocarbons or coalbed methane extraction, currently, a major focus of non-conventional oil and gas companies is on the Athabasca oil sands (also known as the tar sands) in northern Alberta.

Generally, oil sands projects are done on a large scale, with little exploration risk, because the resources is known to exist. The unique challenges for oil sands companies revolve around execution of projects, environmental impacts and the cost of oil extraction. Technologies involving steam-assisted drainage are proving to be increasingly efficient and are attracting producers and investors to this previously unviable source of oil.
